They spent most of the afternoon at the bike shop, and by the time Brooklyn was properly outfitted with her new bright yellow single gear bike it was almost dusk. The bike shop Kerri had chosen was close to the West Side Highway, and they went over to the Hudson River bike path and rode just a couple of miles so Brooklyn's butt wouldn’t hurt.

It certainly wasn’t warm out, but they’d expended enough energy that they were able to sit comfortably on a bench while staving off the chill winds. After seeing several gay couples walk by, Brooklyn said, “After much prodding, you told me in California that you were single. Does Dakota know that?”

Her tone showed she was teasing, but Kerri could tell it was a serious question. “She should. She's the one who broke up with me.” At Brooklyn’s surprised look, she nodded, “Yes, Dakota was my first, and longest lasting girlfriend. We’re still very close.”

“So that's her apartment?”

“Yeah.” You want to know if we have sex, but I’m not going to tell you. Big brown eyes continued to stare right at her, so Kerri offered a little more. “I visit her a couple of times a year, and she stays with me when she comes to LA.”

“That's interesting. Ashley and I don’t hate each other, but we're both happy to keep things at a Christmas-card level.”

“Luckily for me, Dakota and I keep things at an ‘I’d love to have you stay with me’ level. It saves thousands.” That’s all I’m giving up, Brooklyn. We’ve got to be real friends to share real details.
